RECOGNITION OF THE WORK OF THE RHODES ACADEMY
BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UNITED NATIONS
With a resolution dated December 23, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly recognized the significant contribution of the Rhodes Academy to promoting the implementation of the rules of the Law of the Sea worldwide, stating specifically that the General Assembly:
"recognizes with appreciation the important contribution to capacity-building in the field of the law of the sea by the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy, a cooperative undertaking by the Center of Oceans Law and Policy of the University of Virginia School of Law, the Aegean Institute of the Law of the Sea and Maritime Law, the Law of the Sea Institute of Iceland, the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law, the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea of Utrecht University and the Centre for International Law of the National University of Singapore that offers a prominent three-week summer course annually in Rhodes, Greece, celebrates its twentieth anniversary in 2015 and has graduated more than 700 students from more than 120 countries”.

This was followed by General Assembly resolutions on December 5, 2017, December 11, 2018, December 2, 2020, December 9, 2021, December 30, 2022, December 5, 2023, and December 3, 2024.
International Recognition
On November 6, 2014, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Aegean Institute and the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) in the ceremony hall of Rhodes City Hall. The Korean delegation consisted of: Sung Gwi Kim (President), Jong Deog Kim (Director of the Strategic Research Department), Yong An Park (Senior Research Officer), and Young Kil Park (Director of the Maritime Research Center).
On February 9, 2015, a Chinese delegation from the city of Qingdao, representing the Colleges and Universities Working Committee and Education office, signed a cooperation protocol with the Aegean Institute in the City Hall ceremony hall, in the presence of Regional Governor George Hadjimarkos and Mayor of Rhodes Fotis Hadjiadiakos. The Chinese delegation was led by the Deputy Secretary-General of the Qingdao local government, Mr. Wang Wei Ping.
On April 30, 2015, following the completion of a seminar held in Rhodes for students of the Odessa Maritime University, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Aegean Institute and the Odessa Maritime University, represented by Professor Dmytro Doykov, in the ceremony hall of the Rhodes City Hall.
On July 13, 2014, during a brief stopover in Rhodes on his way to Brazil for the sixth BRICS summit, Chinese President Xi Jiping met with Greek Prime Minister Samaras and members of the Greek government. The Chinese President visited the Aegean Institute, where he was briefed by Director Nikolaos Skourtos on the Institute's activities and, in particular, its cooperation with Chinese academic institutions. During the meeting, the Chinese President referred to the long tradition of China and Greece in shipping and urged the Institute to intensify and expand its cooperation with China.
