In recognition of the work of the Rhodian Academy, the charitable foundation

"Alexander S. Onassis" entrusted it with the selection and awarding of the "Onassis Distinguished Scholar Award" to international figures who have made a particularly significant contribution to the study and promotion of the application of the Law of the Sea. To date, the following individuals have been honored with this award by the Rhodian Academy: Professor and academic E. Roukonas (Greece), former ambassador A. Iacovides (Cyprus), former ambassador Shabtai Rosenne (Israel), former ambassador and former Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Satya N. Nandan (Fiji), the first president of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, Thomas A. Mensah (Ghana), and former ambassador Tommy Koh (Singapore).
